The role of Aelita was played
by another dream creature, Julia
Solntseva, Dovzhenko’s future
companion. She completed his
unfinished films, and so got
herself insulted as a liberty-
taking widow by the Ukrainians,
always ready to insult the
Russians for something.

One night in 195… after a
screening in Moscow,
someone introduced me to Julia
Solntseva. I saw a standoffish,
bored little woman with clearly
very little desire to listen to this
foreigner who didn’t have time
to speak to her of Aelita, and
who watched her disappear into
the night like a dying star.
