No doubt this was the image of my
family's dreams when they took
advantage of Uncle Anton's stay in Cuba
to confide me, through him, to the leading-
light establishment of the French colony
(and of Cuba's high society). The outcome
, it must be said, was rather different: for them
the first in a long series of disappointments.
And for me, the first look at an island that
would count so much in my life.
