So this first trip fell entirely beneath the sign of color. And yet there
remain a few black-and-white signs as well, leaves torn in disorder
from a traveler's diary, where I now read the prefiguration of another,
much later trip, the return after the disaster... But if there is something
in these 1955 faces that foretells the gray days of 1980, it slipped in
despite me. At the time I was overtaken by the joys of the treasure-seeker
-and once again the camera's eye saw better and further than the eye
that peered through the viewfinder.
