Cinema is what introduced us to dialectics: the word spy, which signified
a treacherous bastard when applied to a German, took on a sense of hero
or heroine when applied to the Allies. I accuse myself of having composed,
at the age of eight, a comic strip on « the Big One, » as it was then called,
where the German roles were played by dogs and the Allied roles by cats,
which says it all. But it was also cinema that would change our vision, and
would one day help us understand how a hand seen in close-up could, as it
fell, no longer be an enemy hand.
