At that time, Joan of Arc and the Battle of Verdun were part of a
single mythology of « French epics. » A curious childhood, split
between the still-fresh memory of the First World War and the
expectation of the second (oh yes, we knew). Cinema did not
cease to denounce the first, in hope of making the second
impossible; one can measure its power by this example. A
childhood marked by never-forgotten titles: Westfront 1918,
The Four Horsemen of the apocalypse, Verdun vision d’histoire,
La Grande Epreuve, and the enigmatic Espionne ou la Guerre
sans Armes (Spy, or War without Arms)…
