Professor Watanabe of Keio University has carried out a series of
experiments on the vision and emotion of animals, using painting
for his tests. "Pigeons." he claims. "seem capable of distinguishing
a figurative painting by Monet from an abstract canvas by Picasso.
" His team trained pigeons to make this distinction by rewarding them
for each right answer. By continually repeating the experiment, the
researchers were able to get the pigeons to recognize a Monet or a
Picasso even upon seeing it for the first time. What's more, the ones
trained to react to Monet's work proved sensitive to Cézanne, while
those accustomed to Picasso recognized Braque.
