Bérard’s decor was
the cutaway view of
a frigate, at once the
scene of the action
for the story of the
Corsaire in 1716, and
its reproduction in a
Hollywood studio. The
actor Frank O’Hara-Jouvet
and his partner Georgia
Swance, played by Miss
Ozeray, initially believed
they were in love, but soon
came to realize that fate was
forcing them to replay the love
of the corsair and his captive.
At the end of the opening tableau,
when he was told the story for the
first time. Jouvet struck a pose on
the proscenium, and a green lamp
lit up his eyes while the lights went
dim. There again, you say to yourself
that you may be the only one to have
preserved the memory of that gaze.
