LE CORSAIRE was an exception in Jouvet’s program at the Athénée. Marcel Achard
was the author of very good comedies, the Athénée for us at that time was Jouvet’s
temple, and Jouvet was the high priest of Giraudoux. Then suddenly we embarked,
that’s the word for it, on a pirate story complete with time travel, resembling nothing
that Achard, Jouvet and the Athénée had ever done before or would ever do again…
Maybe this oddity was what fascinated us? But also a stroke of luck: one of us having
succeeded in getting himself hired as a walk-on, that generous soul took advantage
of the probable invisibility of a little schoolboy in the great nave of the theater, and
let each of us in turn enter under his name. So that each night a different boy came
on rubbing his head at stage left (he was supposed to have run into the main mast),
much this smarting walk-on of the last act changed in appearance.
