John Bruck (1955, Detroit) was a jack-of-all-trades before
declaring himself a painter. Now he refuses to talk about it,
and says tongue-in-cheek that he wished he'd changed his
name, "like Muhammed Ali, but now it's too late." Strongly
influenced by Francis Bacon for a while, his painting seems
to be developing in recent years toward something more
peaceful, where the anxiety is more a matter of conflicting
colors than tormented forms. He has lots of jazz-musician
friends, and takes great pleasure in having composed a series
of album covers under various pseudonyms, which he calls
"my secret museum." Not so secret after all, since he gave
into the siren songs of marketing and released a luxurious
bound set, under the very name he would have liked to
change.
