Salomon Fischberg (1951-1973) was one of the most
gifted artists among the neo-abstractionists who gathered
around Julius Katzenborn during the Movement years.
His dazzling participation in all the actions of the time,
his many stints in prisons and detox centers, his long drift
into hard drugs and tragic death were all destined to feed
his myth, pushing his spare, austerc painting inte the
background. Born in New York of Austrian parents who
had emigrated at the very outset of the war, he violently
rejected his European origins and proclaimed himself
" citizen of chaos." Almost all his canvases now belong
to collectors, and no broad retrospective has been
possible so far.
