Francis Altamont was born in 195 in Columbus.
Obio. and studied at the Sixtine School in Providence. Various
stays on Indian reservations in Arizona and Utah led him
tointerest in testures and materials, and he developed
what he calls action threading, a mix between instinctive
painterly gesture and the slow approach to fabrics. in 1989
he was awarded a Horrigan fellowship which allowed him
to pursue his explorations in other Indian territories and in
related places like Hokkaido and Yakutia. An exhibition
of his entire body of work at the MoMA in New York in
1993 brought him recognition as a major figure of
postmodern art.
