Altons Roxen (1944, Dresden) emigrated to the United
States in the carly-sisties, fleeing a kind of ant education
which he judged incompatible with his own ideas and
traditions (his lather had been friends with TAra and
one of the champions of the Neue Sachlichkeit), The
somewhat dated aspects of his expressionist nostalgia fit
in strangely weil with the first quivers of the psychedelic
style, and so fork time this German imported from another
continent and another age became the gurd of the young
Californians of the sixties He dropped out of sight with
the next tum of the tide, then reappeared again in 1977
at the Documenta in Kassel (along with Beuys and Nam
June Paik) as a convert to video art..
