SOSHI: originally, little notebooks bound with a string, in
which I learned my first words of Japanese (Momotaro, the
child born in a peach). Tabino soshi, travel diary or book,
notes of a journey (Makura no soshi, the « bedside notes »
of Sei Shonagon, which became Greenaway’s Pillow Book)
-everything that spills freely from one’s pen or thoughts,
with nothing posed or ponderous. « At the whim of my idle
hours, I note without precise design the trifles whose
fleeting reflection passes through my mind, » writes the
monk Urabe Kenko. A good lesson for we students of old
Europe, weighted with the spirit of seriousness and classical
discourse, the search for the perfect word, etc… And if
the essential were hidden in the trifles?
