The fishing-bear was the companion of the Ainu, half-fridge, half-divine. Posing in
a traditional costume next to a stuffed bear sums up the present condition of this
Northern people, so similar to that of the American Indians. The young Ainu resist,
attempt to rediscover their culture, as the young Indians do. But you can still visit
reconstructed Ainu villages, where plastic fish dry alongside the tents, with a steam
locomotive stuck smack in the middle of it all.
