YUME-NO-SHIMA, or Dream Island: it was a section of the
port of Tokyo reserved for the dumping of household wastes, back
in the eighties. One saw a jumble of plastic bags in contrasting
colors floating out to the horizon, like an Yves Tanguy painting.
Even in its cursed share, this city rendered homage to modern art.
Yet another thing of the past. The new fields of detritus are
kept outside of the visitor’s eyeshot before incineration (though
even these photos, at the time, were a little bit clandestine…). So
you can look on this image like the views of carriages,
Double-decker omnibuses, or strollers in boater hats that now
evoke such emotional nostalgia for Old Paris.
