It can happen that a photograph of wild laughter makes your heart stand still… Here the
workers of the recently nationalized Sumar factory are watching their boss stumble all over
his explanations on television, and they’re cracking up. Everything is so simple now, just as
Allende said, it’s up to them to organize and prove that they can do so much better than the
bosses. Here more than in images of meeting or quotations of slogans, we touch the subtle
motor of history that Malraux once took as a title: Man’s Hope. The scene takes place in
September 1972 -and that hope doesn’t quite have one year left to live.
