All the gestures, gazes, and phrases have a double meaning, and Vertigo is
probably the only film for which a double viewing is not only recommended
but indispensable, to reread the entire first part in light of the second. « The first
great surrealist film, » wrote Cabrera Infante, and if there is a theme with a lasting
presence in the imaginary, surrealist and romantic alike, it is surely that of the
Double, of the Doppelgänger (which from Doctor Jekyll to Kagemusba, from
The Prisoner of Zenda to Persona, paves a royal road through the history of cinema).
