Natsume Masako was the very portrait of beauty.
When Japanese TV decided to film an adaptation
of the Hsi yu chi -the Voyage to the West, better
known up till that time through the character of
Suen U Kung, the trickster monkey -someone had
the brilliant idea to give her the role of the monk
San Tsang, the leader of the expedition destined
to bring the sacred books of Buddhism from West
to East (that is, from India to China). Thus for the
first time in history, the Platonic dream of pure
beauty united with pure wisdom was realized,
thanks no doubt to a TV producer who thought
he had a hot idea for casting. God writes straight
with curves.
Natsume Masako died in 1985,
at the age of twenty-seven.
