Visits to the local campesinos: they
live in poverty, not misery, which in Latin
America is more than a nuance. One
can verify that the Cuban children's
famous quart of milk per day was not
plain propaganda. There really was a
tremendous effort in tavor ot the poor.
But just as a body afflicted with cancer
cannot develop and strengthen without
developing and strengthening the disease
that will destroy it, so the revolution
advanced with the cancer of power within
it. Nothing to be astounded by there, we
saw the same thing elsewhere. What no
one expected was the return to the worst
images of the past, Cuba once again a
stopover for sexual tourism... That had
long been a criterion for me, among those
innumerable black holes of the socialist
world: at least the women would no longer
sell themselves. Wrong.
